So much to say, so little time

Lauderdale Lakes Library

I was very happy in my old Library, but due to some organizational changes. I have been placed here.  I have always been a Youth Services Librarian, I also ran story times for all ages.  I did tours outreach programs and more.  I am now an Adult librarian and am not happy with this change.  I miss working with the kids.  I only have a few years until retirement so I have to stick it out but it's not going to be easy.

May 22nd we had to put my furbaby Phoebe to sleep.  She had cancer in her mouth called osteosarcoma.  It was one of the hardest decisions I had to make.  We all went to the vet together as a family to support each other.  She is now with her Mayah and grandpa.

This year and a half has been filled with many challenges. We moved to a smaller house that has an HOA.  We never belonged to an HOA before and I am not liking it too much.  There are too many restrictions.  I can't do anything in my little back area.  I can't fence in anything.  I wish we could move to a larger house with a yard and no restricitions.

It's 7 years tomorrow that I last saw my daddy.

 I could say father but he was always daddy not dad to me.  He was so much more than that, I miss him still so much it hurts.  He was my mentor, hero, friend, confidant, my everything.  I miss his laugh, his easy ways, his love, all of him.  It was a long road after my mom died.  In the very beginning it wasn't bad at all, he just needed help with basic stuff, he was driving had girlfriends and it was good having him live with us.  Everything started going downhill around 1999-2000 he started having trouble with his walking, he had prostate cancer and needed radiation treatment, which left him incontinent.  But he still had his girlfriends. Then the nice one died and the smart one didn't want to go out with him any more because she knew there was something going on with his health.  Only Mildred held on.  We all hated her, she used him only to go out for dinner and to movies. etc.  But he was happy with her and that's all that mattered.  In 2000 I think is when he totaled his car and then I started to drive him on his dates.  I don't think Mildred liked that too much......to be continued

I really want to start bloging about my caretaking I don't want to forget what it was like.

It's been a long time since I posted anything. I've been thinking about my dad George lately, and everything that happened to him and that I experienced with him. This is a song I found to get me through sometimes.

Teen Tech Week Cont....

I have eight teens in the computer lab, I think they are having fun. I gave a short instruction on our data bases and then on Melville Dewey decimal system. Everyone one was very unimpressed.

Teen Tech Week

It's Teen Tech Week! I am sitting in the computer lab waiting for the middle schoolers to finish school. Non of the Teens have come in to the Cyber Game program I planned for Teen Tech Week. The high school lets out at 2:30 so I thought I would get a few teens in to at least see what we would be doing. I told the Anime Club about it and handed out a flyer, so far no one. The middle school gets out at 4:00 so if by 4:30 no one shows I will pack up and go back to the reference desk.

This is new technology that I could learn to love. Fingertip Digitizer.

With the tap of a single finger, computer users soon may be drawn deeper into the virtual world using a new device developed in the University at Buffalo's Virtual Reality Lab.
UB researchers say their "Fingertip Digitizer," which users wear on the tip of the index finger, can transfer to the virtual world the meaning and intent of common hand gestures, such as pointing, wagging the finger, tapping in the air or other movements that can be used to direct the actions of an electronic device, much like a mouse directs the actions of a personal computer, but with greater precision.
What's more, the Fingertip Digitizer can transfer to personal computers very precise information about the physical characteristics of an object -- and even can sense the shape and size of a human gland or tumor -- when a user taps, scratches, squeezes, strokes or glides a finger over the surface of the object.
According to Kesavadas, the Fingertip Digitizer will help bridge the gap between what a person knows and what a computer knows.
"With this device a computer, cell phone or computer game could read human intention more naturally," he explains. "Eventually the Fingertip Digitizer may be used as a high-end substitute for a mouse, a keyboard or a joystick."

The libraries of the future

Susan Gibbons is associate dean for Public Services and Collection Development at the University of Rochester, River Campus Libraries. In 2005, she was named one of Library Journal’s 'Movers & Shakers' and was a Visiting Program Officer for the Association of Research Libraries in 2006. Susan Gibbons’ 2007 book The Academic Library and the Net Gen Student talks about gaming in the library and how important it really is. According to Gibbons,"Gaming is not just about playing games it involves socializing,conversations, reading, writing, research, buying and selling, the formation and dissolution of partnerships and pacts, mentoring, instruction, and a host of other activities." Gibbons focuses solely on Massive Multiplayer Online Role-playing Games (MMORPGs). I will be active in the library's future

I joined Facebook and invited some friends to join me. I added photos and joined some Library groups. This looks like it will be fun!

Using Overdrive

I used Overdrive to put Black Rose by Nora Roberts, I still prefer holding a book in my hand to read. But I think it is a very useful application.

Podcasts

I think podcasts are very interesting. I found a great one on Digg. This is a podcast on Autism. It is a series. I added it to my RSS feed. I am a visual learner therefore I learn better by having material in my hands and reading.

U Tube: Librarians working with special needs customers

I chose this video, because I think this is an important topic that is not discussed enough. We have many customers using library services with special needs, but we are not always helping them in the best way for that individual. This is partially due to lack of training in this area.

I looked at some of the sites and I like the Medstory one the best. I gave accurate and up to date information on medical conditions.

Zoho word writer

I am trying this new word processing program. I like the idea of being able to retrieve my documents from every computer. I tried to import a Power Point Presentation to the slide show and it froze and I had to restart the application. Let's see what pictures I can insert. I can't find how to inset pictures. This is frustrating for me.

Tried and Tried

What I think about Wikis

A Wiki is a place for information. I have used Wikipedia several times, however, I never know if they are true facts or not. Anyone can post a Wiki.

I like the website http://libsuccess.org/index.php?title=Main_Page I think it has a lot of useful information. As stated on the main page introduction "This wiki was created to be a one-stop shop for great ideas and information for all types of librarians. All over the world, librarians are developing successful programs and doing innovative things with technology that no one outside of their library knows about. There are lots of great blogs out there sharing information about the profession, but there is no one place where all of this information is collected and organized. That's what we're trying to do."

But how is this site authenticated? These are just random peoples do we know if they are accurate?
